Jesse Chase-Lubitz, the co-founder of Edifice (and “JCL” for the yet to be initiated), just published a piece on an emerging and innovative technology, which was then picked up by the lifestyle industry, and is now actively transitioning into an efficient, climate-friendly tech: “Smart Glass.”
Smart glass, which is part of US President Biden’s new Inflation Reduction Act policy, is one of many vaguely environmentally promising products the market is circling around to gain a competitive advantage over carbon-emitting companies.
The Biden administration clearly pained themselves to add the word “smart” to everything they could in the Inflation Reduction Act, offering an olive branch to the onslaught of climate-tech companies lobbying for a boost.
What is it?
Smart Glass “has essentially the same effect as ‘Transition’ sunglass lenses: It darkens when exposed to sunlight. Except in this case the tinting effect is created by an electrical charge, which can be activated naturally or by remote control. For modern buildings that feature a lot of glass, the technology can be used to temper intense sunlight and expand the use of shared spaces.”
Eyes on the penultimate paragraph for the kicker… “The technology’s proponents have thus far leaned on aesthetics, but a global energy crunch and the impacts of climate change are moving the conversation toward efficiency.”
